Harlem School of Urban Music and Recording Arts

Mission Statement

The Harlem School of Urban Music and Recording Arts at Frederick Douglass Academy is the first combined music and music production program of its kind to be offered in the United States.

Students accepted into the program study current New York urban music styles: jazz, salsa and latin jazz, hip-hop and rock with a demonstrated application of a formal music background.  Students experience the process of modern music-making from start to finish: music composition, production in the digital audio workstation (DAW), and mixing and mastering the final product.

The Harlem School Program at Frederick Douglass Academy, Harlem (Dr. Gregory Hodge, principal) is designed for academically-accomplished students who love music and would like to be involved seriously in the creation and the performance of it.  Additionally, students will be able to earn credits towards graduation for their successful involvement in the program.
