“A former Mingus Big Band member and Eddie Palmieri sideman, trombonist-composer-arranger Doug Beavers assembled a fine New York crew for his second outing as leader. There are several fine originals here: the exhilarating title track; “Lapse,” a beautiful ballad feature for pianist Henry Hey; the brooding, suitelike “Brink”; and the dynamic “Scurry,” featuring some heated exchanges between trumpeter Alex Sipiagin and tenor saxophonist Marc Mommaas. But the nonet also turns in thoughtful reinventions of Clare Fischer’s “Pensativa,” Chick Corea’s “Gemini,” Tony Williams’ “Hand Jive” and McCoy Tyner’s “Blues on the Corner.” Exceptional work throughout.”

Titanes del Trombón a smash at San Jose Jazzfest 2011!

The performance last Friday by my Titanes del Trombón salsa outfit was a success on many levels at San Jose Jazzfest 2011. You check out new video and photos of the event at the Titanes del Trombón page.

We were even selected by the San Jose Mercury News an top-eight "act not to miss at San Jose Jazz" in an article by Andrew Gilbert:

"Trombone master Doug Beavers is a rising force in Latin jazz who's a triple threat as a soloist, arranger and bandleader. A product of the local scene (he studied with Dave Eshelman at Cal State East Bay, nee Hayward), Beavers earned a spot in jazz history when he played a crucial role in Eddie Palmieri's Grammy-winning revival of his trombone-powered La Perfecta ensemble. Championing his oft-overlooked horn with Titanes del Trombón, Beavers has assembled an all-star band featuring fellow 'bone experts Wayne Wallace and Abel Figueroa. Rick Erben of Jazz Junction 91.5 KIOS FM Omaha Public Radio has voted Two Shades of Nude "Top Album of 2010" amongst an esteemed pool prominent jazz artists. In the nod Mr. Erben writes:

"This is his second leadership effort and a gem – my pick for top album of the year...... Throughout this fine release there is a rewarding sense deriving from the exquisite arranging that is every bit as integral to the recording as solo sections. Beavers' warm trombone sound and well-constructed solos provide the centerpiece for an album that is a veritable feast of listening satisfaction."
